Hi, I just bought the Peterbilt 359 mod, and followed the instructions to install it. I have the following files in my Mods folder:

      ATS_RTA-Mods_Peterbilt_359_v3.4_Part1.scs
      ATS_RTA-Mods_Peterbilt_359_v3.4_Part2.scs
      DLC_SCS_for_RTA_trucks_v1.2.scs
      RTA_Sound_Pack_2_v1.2_Part3.scs

I have them ordered so part 1 is at the bottom, then part 2 above it and the sound pack part 3 above that. I didn’t use the DLC SCS for RTA trucks file at first, because it wasn’t mentioned in the instructions. I have tried it both with, and without it, and I still get crashes.

The mod loads fine. I can see the truck in the Truck Browser. I have even taken it for a ‘Quick Job’, but when I tried to buy it, I got as far as the cutscene where it shows the truck outside my new garage, and CTD. I tried again and skipped the cutscene. This time it let me get in the truck, but after a moment it CTD. If I go straight to the job market, the job screen freezes.

I’m sure this is something simple, and probably a conflict with another mod, but I am new to ATS so I’m not sure what to do. I’ll try it next with all my other mods disabled and see what happens.

        Look in your game.log first.
the default location on a Windows box is : “Documents\American Truck Simulator”
You can open it with Notepad. Right at the end of that file, is the last thing the game did before CTD.
Copy the last couple dozen lines and paste them here.

Hi, Thanks for responding. A quick check of that log revealed a load of errors related to a couple of mods that are nothing to do with RTA (a Kenworth Truck and a skin pack for it), so I’ll sort that out first. When I disabled those mods, the game sent me all the way back to my garage, and I’m in the middle of a trip. I’ll put everything back as it was, finish that trip, clean up my mods, buy a new Peterbilt 359 and recheck the log. Hopefully it won’t

Ok, I cleaned up my mods, resaved, sold my truck and bought a new 359. A few moments into the cutscene outside the dealer I got a crash to desk top, exactly as before. It pans around the truck, and as it gets towards the rear, it crashes. Strangely, I have been able to drive the truck into my garage once before it crashed, and I have even done a Quick Job in a 359. Here is the last part of the game.log, as requested:

It mentions ‘trailer’, but there is no trailer attached. It does seem upset about a ‘temporary buffer’. Any idea what that is? ATS is running off an SSD with 300GB of spare space, and my Windows drive has 180GB of space. Here is the first part of the log, with my system stats:

Any suggestions?  The log had no other errors at all except the “temporary buffer insufficient” ones and a few references to scenery cities I don’t own.

I think I might have solved it. Or at least found a workaround. Or got lucky. I searched for the error message on Google, and one suggestion was to change the config.cfg. I changed “set r_buffer_page_size” from 10 to 20, bought the default 359 Day Cab from the dealer and was at least able to drive it about. But I’ve done that before, and when I checked the game.log, it still has exactly the same error messages as before. It’s just not crashing the game now.

The buffer_size warnings are the game reporting that it found models that exceed the allocation. It’s just a warning, but it can impact game performance too.
Read this for more info on how to fix the warnings.

Hi. Now that is really useful information – and the linked article is excellent – it should be mandatory reading for new players. Given that the latest update to ATS was based around lighting, and came with the implication that this was the beginning of a much bigger graphics overhaul, you’d think that SCS would have given us a slightly more elegant way of allocating larger memory pools. After all, the game knows everything about the system it’s running on. Anyhoo. I’ll give that a try. I’m quietly confident, because the earlier tweak to the config.cfg let me test the truck. I’ve come to ATS from the world of flight simulation, so if one tiny tweak is all it takes, I’ll call that a win!

Rather annoyingly, as a newcomer to ATS I only have one garage space, and to buy the Peterbilt I’ll have to sell my current truck, which I don’t want to do. So any testing is being done using a saved game, and I don’t get to keep the Peterbilt at the end of the test! Not to worry. It gives me something to look forward to.

The truck really does look gorgeous. The high poly-count really shows. Once I’m further into the game I will definitely be buying more RTA trucks.

It won’t be long before you’ll get emails about expanding your garage(s). Quickest way is a bank loan.
Look around the map and find garages, takes quick jobs from where you are to that city with that garage.
One the way to the delivery point, stop at the garage and purchase it.
Or simply upgrade your existing one-slot garage and then purchase the truck.
